I asked audience members from the GWU Women's Literature discussion to tell me the kinds of books they like to read, and I promised to give them personalized book recommendations on my blog.
This one is for Jamie. She said she likes women's literature & chick-lit (Time Traveler's Wife); some non-ficton (3 Cups of Tea). So...for you I'm recommending Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia by Elizabeth Gilbert. I read this book last year and enjoyed it. I typically go for fiction, and this is non-fiction. So it's a little out of my regular genre, but I found the story's abandon and adventure fascinating.
At the age of thirty-one, Gilbert moved with her husband to the suburbs of New York and began trying to get pregnant, only to realize that she wanted neither a child nor a husband. Three years later, after a protracted divorce, she embarked on a yearlong trip of recovery, with three main stops: Rome, for pleasure (mostly food-wise, with a special emphasis on gelato); an ashram outside of Mumbai, for spiritual searching; and Bali, for "balancing."
I also love traveling, so reading this book made me feel like I was in these three destinations.
Jamie, will you let me know what you think of this recommendation? Have you already read it? Did you like it? They're making a movie out of it, I hear, so I'm looking forward to that. I always like to read a book first and then watch the movie to see how other people portray the characters that I'd pictured in my imagination.

Wow...I think I will love this book. For me as well I prefer fiction to non fiction but I'm always up for a good read. And I'm glad you mentioned this one. I have seen it around but haven't yet checked it out. It would be great to read it before the movie comes out. Of course I am the same. Not sure if you have read or seen "My Sisters Keeper" but I read that book first and then I watched the movie and it just wasn't the same. The brother Jesse was worse in the book, the ending was completely different I think it would have been a better movie if the ending was the same as the books. If you've read it what is your opinion of it? I'd love to hear someone elses perspective.
ReplyDeleteBut I have to agree I love chick lit a lot. Even so I've become fond of an author I just stumbled upon by the name of Evinda Lepins. She talks about a lot of the same stuff I grew up like and I really want to read her stuff when it comes out. Have you heard of Evinda Lepins?

ReplyDeleteYes, I have read My Sister's Keeper! Read further down my blog because there's a whole discussion on that particular book. I haven't seen that movie, but now I want to just to compare it. I liked the ending of the book, so I too think the movie should have stayed true to the writing.
No, I haven't heard of Evinda Lepins. What kind of topics does she write about? What is a title of a book you like by her?

ReplyDeleteHi Marlena, I will have to look for your discussion on My sisters keeper. And Yes you should watch the movie I think they did a good job of it, but you will see what I mean about leaving some things out.
ReplyDeleteA friend from work sent me the book through inter office mail and I read it cover to cover and cried my eyes out to sleep at the end of the book. It was such a great ending. I was hoping to do the same in the movie. I love the tear jerkers!! I think I did in the movie so it was still good, I just think some good parts from the book were left out that's all. Check it out and let me know. I'd love to hear what you think.
Evinda Lepins writes about Chick Lit and her past experiences in life. I love that it seems more genuine. I've only just found out about her and wanted to know more about her.
